leonard cohen is romancin’ me hard today.
ugh this song. I love how he sings about such powerful longing & lust with such extreme restraint - somehow enhances it further

Leonard Cohen can still articulate melancholy better than anyone, in this case, the depression within love, love of the depressed, depression as a disease not sexually but romantically transmitted.
I caught the darkness
it was drinking from your cup
I caught the darkness
drinking from your cup
I said “is this contagious?”
You said “just drink it up.”I got no future
I know my days are few
the present’s not that pleasant
Just a lot of things to do
I thought the past would last me
But the darkness got that tooI should’ve seen it coming
It was right behind your eyes
You were young and it was summer
I just had to take a dive
Winning you was easy
But darkness was the priceI don’t smoke no cigarette
I don’t drink no alcohol
I ain’t had much loving yet
But that’s always been your call
I don’t miss it baby
I got no taste for anything at allI used to love the rainbow
And I used to love the view
I loved the early morning
I pretended it was new
But I caught the darkness, baby,
and I got it worse than youI caught the darkness
It was drinking from your cup
I caught the darkness
Drinking from your cup
I said “is this contagious?”
you said “just drink it up.”
When I turn up the rickety old gramophone
the wow and flutter from a scratched LP
summons up white walls, the table, the single bed
where Lydia Languish will meet her Le Fanu:
his songs have meant far more to me
than most of the so-called ‘poems’ I’ve read.
— ‘LEONARD COHEN: I’m Your Man’ by Paul Muldoon, Hay
I would like to try your charity
Until you cry, “Now you must try my greed.”
And everything depends upon
How near you sleep to me.
Just take this longing from my tongue.
All the lonely things my hands have done.
Let me see your beauty broken down,
Like you would do for one you love.
— Take this Longing - Leonard Cohen
Hold me close
and tell me what the world is like
I don’t want to look outside
I want to depend on your eyes
and your lips
I don’t want to feel anything
but your hand
on the old raw bumper
I don’t want to feel anything else
If you love the dead rocks
and the huge rough pine trees
Okay I like them too
Tell me if the wind
makes a pretty sound
I’ll close my eyes and smile
Tell me if it’s a good morning
or a clear morning
Tell me what the fuck
kind of morning it is
and I’ll buy it
And get the dog
to stop whining and barking
This isn’t China
nobody’s going to eat it
Okay go if you must
I’ll create the cosmos
by myself
I’ll let it all stick to me
every dismal pine cone
every boring pine needle
And I’ll broadcast my affection
from this shaven dome
360 degrees
to all the dramatic vistas
to all the mists and snows
that move across
the shining mountains
to the women bathing
in the stream
and combing their hair
on the roofs
to the voiceless ones
who have petitioned me
from their surprising silence
to the poor in the heart
though they be rich
to all the thought-forms
and leaking mental objects
that you get up here

Take This Waltz - Leonard Cohen
(translated from a poem by Lorca and rewritten a bit by Cohen)
And I’ll dance with you in Vienna
I’ll be wearing a river’s disguise
The hyacinth wild on my shoulder,
My mouth on the dew of your thighs
And I’ll bury my soul in a scrapbook,
With the photographs there, and the moss
And I’ll yield to the flood of your beauty
My cheap violin and my cross
And you’ll carry me down on your dancing
To the pools that you lift on your wrist
O my love, o my love
Take this waltz, take this waltz
It’s yours now. It’s all that there is.
probably some of my favourite lyrics/one of my favourite songs ever
Maybe I’m still hurting
I can’t turn the other cheek
But you know that I still love you
It’s just that I can’t speak
I looked for you in everyone
And they called me on that too
I lived alone but I was only
Coming back to you
Ah they’re shutting down the factory now
Just when all the bills are due
And the fields they’re under lock and key
Tho’ the rain and the sun come through
And springtime starts but then it stops
In the name of something new
And all the senses rise against this
Coming back to you
And they’re handing down my sentence now
And I know what I must do
Another mile of silence while I’m
Coming back to you
There are many in your life
And many still to be
Since you are a shining light
There’s many that you’ll see
But I have to deal with envy
When you choose the precious few
Who’ve left their pride on the other side of
Coming back to you
Even in your arms I know
I’ll never get it right
Even when you bend to give me
Comfort in the night
I’ve got to have your word on this
Or none of it is true
And all I’ve said was just instead of
Coming back to you
